January 28, 2025 Dear Pastors and Administrators, The occasion of the inauguration of a President is surely a time to pray for our country, for our President, his cabinet, and all elected leaders. Sadly, we have seen in recent days that immigration “enforcement activities” have provoked a great sense of fear and apprehension in our immigrant communities. I write at this time to let you know that we are making plans for an Evening of Prayer in solidarity with the immigrant community of our Diocese. While we hope and pray that the rhetoric and policies of the new administration will not disrupt the lives of hard-working, honest, generous members of our communities, we are aware that coming together in prayer can give comfort and support to those who may be nervous or apprehensive for their safety and security. Our Diocesan leaders and the leadership of Catholic Charities have been in contact with community leaders and with Fr. Leonardo Lopez, pastor of Sacred Heart and Holy Rosary parishes in Dover, to plan an Evening of Prayer on Thursday, February 13, 2025, beginning with Mass at 7:00 pm in Sacred Heart Church. Please see the attached Flyer for more details. In this Jubilee Year of Hope, as Pilgrims of Hope, let us look forward to this opportunity to come together in prayer and solidarity with our sisters and brothers who may be in need of hope at this time. If you have questions or would like more information, please feel free to be in contact with Fr. Duberney Villamizar, Vicar for Hispanic Affairs, or with Joseph Murray, Executive Director, Catholic Family and Community Services. I would be grateful if you could share this invitation with your parishioners and for any support that you can offer to share this message of solidarity and hope. *** For pastors who may hear of enforcement activity in your community, Fr. Duberney recently attended a “Justice for Immigrants” Workshop hosted by the USCCB. They would like us to let them know of any details of the activity, such as: Date, time, location, and number of persons detained. If you have information, please email Fr. Duberney at: dvillamizar@patersondiocese. Fraternally in Christ, |
